What the differential actually is? The differential allows the outer drive wheel to rotate faster then the inner drive wheel during a turn. If the wheel had been fixed with one shaft, it would have led to skidding and more difficult handling during a turn (and would be necessary to put much greater effort to handle it). The device that balances the peripheral speed of the outer and inner wheel is called the differential. It makes the handling easier. But there may emerge a situation when one of the wheel spins, for example when you drive on the ice or mud. In this case, you can use differential locking to take out the differential from operation. At this point, both wheels convey full torque, as if they were fixed.
